ATLAS.ti supports multi-media qualitative data analysis. Besides textual documents, it supports the analysis of photographs, audiotapes and videotapes. Coding in ATLAS.ti is very easy. Its strongest feature is its network tool. This tool allows you to examine the logical relations between codes. It also has a hypertext facility so you can link passages within a text and view the linkages as a network. |

Decision Explorer is a mapping tool that is used to structure and analyse qualitative information. It will be of use to researchers and practitioners who need to structure and draw conclusions from 'soft' information, with a clear focus on problem definition and problem structuring for problem solving or strategy development |

QSR XSight is designed for market
researchers working to tight deadlines.
A modeler allows you to brainstorm ideas about the data which you can
then drag into a framework to record verbatims and/
or summaries of the data. You do not
have to work from transcripts. Queries
help you look for patterns and you can write up reports and presentation
slides directly in the software. |

QSR has totally re-designed NVIVO so it has a very intuitive interface based on Microsoft Outlook. Your project is secure as each project is one flat file, making your data not only safe but easily portable. It supports a sophisticated system of hyperlinks, allowing you to write up within the software using links to the database to support your arguments. These links turn into endnotes when printed out or exported to WORD. The relationship tool allows for a more holistic way to code – coding for statements or relationships between people, items and processes. These can be dragged into the Modeler for a visual representation. Attribute variables are displayed in a spreadsheet and can be directly imported from Excel. A very powerful Query Tool allows you to cut your data in many ways. It also produces matrix tables which can be exported into Excel. There is also support for the analysis of graphics and photographs. |

MAXqda has a nice simple interface that allows you to easily find any part of your project. There are four main windows showing the texts already imported, the list of codes, the list of coded segments and the text itself. However, the simplicity of the structure does not mean it lacks sophistication. This is a very powerful tool for textual analysis. A unique feature is that codes can be weighted to give a measure of the significance of a piece of coding, making it possible to retrieve only the most important segments given a particular coding. In addition, there are the add-ons MAXdictio for quantitative content analysis and MAXmaps for visual modeling. |
