FOCUS GROUPS: Methods for Success
Design, moderating, and analysis using the N6 software

 UK | USA

A Five Day Retreat

Focus Groups are a very popular way of collecting qualitative data used in a wide variety of settings. However, there is not much training offered to help those who wish to learn how to successfully conduct this technique. There is even less on how to analyse the data. SdG Associates are offering an intensive residential course to redress this gap. It is structured as a retreat so that participants can focus on the skills they are learning in a serene environment. They will also have the opportunity to get advice from our experts in focus groups and analysis and to network with other participants who are involved in focus group research.

What you will achieve at the end of the course

The aim of the course is to give a thorough training in the Focus Group Method from the conception and conducting of focus groups through to analysis and the production of a report. You will achieve the following:

  • Awareness of when and how focus groups are effective as a research and evaluation method
  • How to plan and conduct a focus group study, including:

·         Study design

·         Recruiting focus group participants

·         Preparing effective questions

·         Moderating the focus group

  • How to prepare for the analysis including transcription and preparation of transcripts for the N6 software
  • How to use the N6 software for coding and analysis
  • How to structure a focus group report

Venue

This retreat will be held at Gliffaes Country House Hotel, outside Crickhowell (near Abergavenny), Powys, Wales. The hotel has been described as a piece of Italy with an English garden fit for a Greek God set in the Welsh hills. The house, built in 1885, is set in a commanding position above the River Usk in the middle of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is situated within 35 acres of gardens. It offers a very serene and beautiful setting where participants will be able to balance the intensive training with time for reflection and relaxation. The hotel also has an excellent reputation for its cuisine and fine wine cellar. Participants will be accommodated in their own spacious en-suite bedroom. The hotel can be reached via the M4 by road if you are coming from London and the Southeast or by the M5 then M50 if you are coming from the North and the Midlands. The nearest rail station is Abergavenny (the nearest mainline rail station is Newport).

Course Leaders

The course will be led by Christine Clements Stein BSc, MPH, PhD and Silvana di Gregorio BA, PhD

The retreat exceeded all expectations. Not only it was very well organized but also delivered in a very clear, relaxed and friendly style! I was impressed with the extra support Silvana and Christine gave to the participants not hesitating in giving advice on our own current research activities. Excellent value for money!
