The development of qualitative software has led to academic disciplines and organisations new to qualitative research seriously considering promoting research using qualitative data. Sometimes this decision is based on a misunderstanding that the software itself can make the research more reliable and valid. However, the software itself is just a tool that aids analysis. The quality of the research depends on the ability of the researchers themselves. This is not to underestimate the value of the software tools to aid in consistent and more in-depth and complex analysis that is difficult to do using manual methods.

SdG Associates offer a complete project needs assessment service aimed at those new to qualitative research. This can include advice on the appropriate qualitative method to use given the nature of the research questions, advice on which software tool would be best for the project, and staff training needs in both qualitative methods and software.

Trouble-shooting

SdG Associates will help you solve problems you may be having with the software you are using on a project. For small-scale problems, researchers should first use the free software discussion list which all the software developers run (see the resource page on this web-site). These discussion lists are all very active and helpful. For more complex problems, SdG can help you solve it by offering half or whole day consultation. SdG also offers telephone and/or e-mail support.
