Computer and Qualitative Analysis
The NVIVO Qualitative Project Book
Bazeley, Pat and Richards, Lyn, (2000) Sage
This is a book that was designed to help you 'learn NVIVO by doing'. You can either work your way through the book using your own data or by using the sample data in the CD-ROM that comes with the book. I think it is a particularly useful book to incorporate in a semester long course to teach students how to do qualitative analysis using a software tool.

Qualitative Data Analysis: A user-friendly guide for social scientists
Dey, Ian, (1993) Routledge
Considering that this book was published in 1993 and software for qualitative analysis has developed considerably since then, this book does not feel outdated. Dey breaks down the processes involved in analysing qualitative data and describes the software tools that can aid each process. In breaking down the process of qualitative analysis, this book is also very useful for those learning how to do qualitative analysis. It is written in an accessible style, using as textual examples extracts from sketches by Woody Allen and Victoria Wood.

Computer Analysis and Qualitative Research
Fielding, Nigel G. and Lee, Raymond M. (1998) Sage
Fielding and Lee draw on research they undertook on users' experiences of using qualitative software packages. They begin with an overview of different approaches to qualitative data analysis and the different analytic logic underlying each which are necessary to understand in order to use the different tools offered by computer software. They then look at the reasons why their users decided to use software and how they used it. Analytical pathologies are explored. The book concludes with new directions for qualitative software tools.

Qualitative Research: Analysis types and software tools
Tesch, Renata (1990) The Falmer Press
This book introduces two major analysis types in qualitative research: structural and interpretational. The author distinguishes between conceptual and mechanical tasks for each and shows how the computer can assist the qualitative researcher during the analysis procedure. The comprehensive coverage of qualitative research approaches will be helpful to any researcher wishing to broaden their knowledge of qualitative research methods and to better understand the various terms used in the field. She also has a very clear section on the differences in coding within quantitative and qualitative analysis which may be particularly useful to those with a quantitative background who are new to qualitative research. Although the second half of the book on various software packages is now completely out of date, the first half of the book is still very informative

Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis
Weitzman, Eben A.and Miles, Matthew B. (1995) Sage
Again, the main part of this book on the differences between the various packages which support qualitative data analysis is now out of date due to rapid pace of development of these packages. However, the way Weitzman and Miles categorise the different types of packages and their uses and their guidelines for choosing a package are still very relevant. Look out for the updated version of this book by Weitzman, Fielding and Lee, which should be out soon.
