Making Sense of Qualitative Data: Complementary Research Strategies
Coffey, Amanda and Atkinson, Paul (1996) Sage
Coffey and Atkinson use the same data set and explore how it can be analysed using a variety of techniques employed in qualitative analysis. The techniques covered are coding, narrative analysis, metaphors and domain analysis, analysis and writing, and analysis and theorising. There is also a chapter on computer-aided analysis. They offer a useful lesson on how qualitative data can be cut and analysed in different ways.

Making Strategy: The Journey of Strategic Management
Eden, Colin & Ackermann, Fran (1998) Sage
This book is a must for anyone who intends to use cognitive mapping in problem definition and strategy development. The book is divided into three sections: the first, dealing with the theoretical basis of cognitive mapping; the second focusing on case studies based on the authors' experience of consulting using this method; and the final section offers detailed practical advice on consulting in this way using the software tool - Decision Explorer. The reader should not be daunted by the size of this book, as the different sections are all cross-referenced and it has been written so it is easy to dip into the sections that are pertinent to one's needs.

Sociological Practice: Linking theory and social research
Layder, Derek (1998) Sage
This book will be of interest to those qualitative researchers who are attracted to grounded theory but are concerned by its divorce from prior theory. Layder offers an alternative that he calls 'adaptive theory' as a way of integrating theory and research. He calls it adaptive in the sense that the theory is shaped by incoming evidence while the data itself is simultaneously adapted by the prior theoretical materials that are relevant to their analysis. He offers a clear outline of how adaptive theory can be put into practice

The Ethnographic Interview
Spradley, James P. (1979) Harcourt Brace Jovanovich College Publishers,
Spradley's domain analysis is often cited in books on qualitative analysis. I suggest reading the original to get a clear understanding of how to proceed.

Basics of Qualitative Research: Grounded Theory Procedures and Techniques, Second Edition
Strauss, Anselm and Corbin, Judith (1998) Sage
For those new to grounded theory, this is a good book to start to understand the procedures involved. However, readers need to be aware that this book caused a split between Strauss and Glaser as to what constitutes 'real' grounded theory. I suggest you also look at the classic grounded theory studies such as Glaser and Strauss' 'Awareness of Dying' as well as the anthology below of examples of grounded theory studies to understand how grounded theory works.

Grounded Theory in Practice
Strauss, Anselm and Corbin, Judith (eds.) (1997) Sage
I think you can learn a lot more from these examples of grounded theory research. Many of the contributors were students of Anselm Strauss.

Transforming Qualitative Data: Description, analysis and interpretation
Wolcott, Harry F. (1994)Sage
Wolcott is an experienced and well-known ethnographer. In this book, he illuminates how an ethnographer goes about analysing data using examples from research that he has conducted. He gives an excellent account of the differences between description, analysis and interpretation and the roles of each.
