This
is an excellent introduction to the theory and practice of qualitative research.
Major theories, methods and new approaches are presented in an accessible

| Analyzing Social Settings: A guide to qualitative observation and analysis (Third Edition) | |
| Lofland, John and Lofland, Lyn (1995) Wadsworth Publishing Company | |
| A
concise, very accessible, practical book which gets into the nitty-gritty
of how to analyse qualitative data. It offers a step-by-step approach to
gathering, focusing and analysing qualitative data. It is particularly good
for field studies and for coding and memoing. (The first edition of this
book was my own introduction to qualitative research.) Available From Amazon.co.uk UK Site Available From Amazon.com US Site |

| Social Research Methods: Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches (Second Edition) | |
| Neuman, W. Lawrence (1994) Allyn and Bacon | |
| My
choice if I had to choose one textbook for an introduction to methodology
course. Part I gives a very clear introduction to different approaches to
research and the role of theory in research. Part II focuses on quantitative
research and covers research designs, measurement, scales and indices, experimental
research, sampling, survey research, nonreactive research, and analysis.
Part III focuses on qualitative research and covers research design, field
research, historical-comparative research, and analysis. Part IV covers
ethical and political issues in social research Available From Amazon.co.uk UK Site Available From Amazon.com US Site |

| Handbook of Qualitative Research Methods for Psychology and the Social Sciences | |
| Richardson, John T.E. (ed.) (1996) BPS Books | |
| This
is a book aimed at those with a quantitative background who want to learn
more about qualitative research. It places qualitative research in the broader
context of scientific knowledge. It also very usefully discusses four qualitative
approaches in detail: protocol analysis, grounded theory, ethnography, and
discourse analysis. For each of these four approaches is a chapter on the
theory behind the approach. A chapter featuring an example of the practical
implementation of the approach then follows the theoretical chapter.
